Rescue teams have been working to reach affected communities and search damaged buildings for people who may still be trapped. Thirteen people have also been reported injured, including two with serious injuries.

The disaster forced around 2,000 residents to leave their homes and move to safer areas. Many others have remained outside their houses because of concerns over further shaking and the condition of damaged buildings.

Several aftershocks were recorded following the main earthquake, including one measuring 6.1 in magnitude. The continued tremors have increased fear among residents and made rescue efforts more difficult.

Since the earthquake occurred offshore, authorities initially issued a tsunami warning and told people living along the coast to move to higher ground. The warning was later lifted after monitoring showed that there was no major tsunami threat. Some areas, however, recorded waves of less than one metre.

The earthquake also affected electricity and communication services in some locations. At a hospital in Ende, patients were moved outside as a precaution while the safety of the building was assessed.

Emergency teams are continuing to search for survivors, treat those who were injured and assess the damage. Authorities are also working to reach areas where landslides and damaged roads have made access difficult.

Indonesia regularly experiences earthquakes because it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where several tectonic plates meet and where seismic activity is common.

Flores has experienced major earthquakes before. In 1992, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the region and triggered a tsunami that killed more than 2,000 people.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as rescue and recovery operations remain underway.

For coffee in particular, Rwanda organizes an annual international competition showcasing the quality of Rwandan coffee. The competition brings together coffee processors and both local and international participants to evaluate different coffee varieties. 

The competition allows coffee processors and exporters to showcase their products, while the highest quality coffees receive awards and are connected with international buyers. It also helps coffee producers understand quality assessment processes and how high quality specialty coffee can attract greater value on international markets.

Beyond coffee, Rwanda is working to expand international markets for agricultural products in order to reduce reliance on a limited number of markets and create more opportunities for exporting higher value agricultural goods. 

The growth in agricultural exports is also supported by efforts to increase production.

Through NAEB programmes, the government supports farmers with improved and climate resilient seeds, planting materials, technical knowledge, agricultural extension services and other measures aimed at improving both productivity and quality.

Farmers remain central to Rwanda’s agricultural export strategy because the quality and quantity of products available for international markets depend heavily on production practices and post-harvest handling.

NAEB also conducts awareness campaigns and capacity building programmes for farmers. These programmes teach farmers about quality requirements, proper harvesting methods, post-harvest handling and what to expect from international markets. 

NAEB says improving product quality will help ensure that Rwanda’s growing agricultural output is transformed into competitive products capable of succeeding in international markets.

These efforts have positioned Rwanda on a strong path toward achieving the objectives of the Second National Strategy for Transformation (NST2) and the Fifth Strategic Plan for Agriculture Transformation (PSTA5).

Rwanda has set a target of earning $1.5 billion from agricultural and livestock exports by the 2028/2029 fiscal year. Based on the $1.1 billion earned in 2025/2026, the country has already achieved approximately 73% of that target.

Both development strategies focus on increasing production, expanding markets, adding value to agricultural products and improving the competitiveness of Rwanda’s agricultural exports.

Although NAEB has welcomed the achievement, it says the milestone should be viewed as a starting point rather than the end goal.

Claude Bizimana said the next phase will focus on increasing export profitability, expanding international markets for Rwandan agricultural products, adding value and strengthening farmers’ capacity to withstand the challenges they face.

“As Rwanda continues to achieve the objectives of NST2 and PSTA5, NAEB is committed to working closely with all stakeholders to increase export earnings, expand products and markets, add value and strengthen resilience and competitiveness.”

All 18 suspects were presented to the media on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at RIB headquarters in Kimihurura, Kigali.

Speaking to journalists, RIB spokesperson Dr. Murangira B. Thierry, said since July 20, 2026, a total of 97 case files related to the production and distribution of substandard alcoholic beverages had been submitted to the prosecution.

He said some of the arrested officials are suspected of abusing the authority entrusted to them by the government, while others allegedly facilitated alcoholic beverage manufacturers to operate despite failing to meet the required standards.

“Some of these officials abused the powers entrusted to them by the government and used them for their personal interests,” Dr. Murangira said.

He added that officials found guilty of abusing their authority for personal gain could face between seven and 10 years in prison, or a fine ranging from Rwf5 million to Rwf10 million.

According to RIB, some of the suspects were responsible for monitoring compliance with quality standards. Some local government officials are also accused of unlawfully issuing licenses to factories that produced alcoholic beverages that did not meet the required standards.

The investigation further found that some factories were operating in violation of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements.

“Some manufacturers used labels that made their products appear legally approved, while the beverages were actually produced in unhygienic facilities,” Dr. Murangira said.

Investigators also identified irregularities in product registration. In some cases, factories registered certain products but later went on to manufacture additional products that had not been registered.

“Over all, the suspects are accused of supplying another person with a chemical substance capable of causing death or seriously harming their health. They also face allegations including the use of forged documents, embezzlement and failure to comply with administrative regulations,” Dr. Murangira said.

Some of the suspects were presented to the media on August 6, 2026, following investigations that had been underway for some time into factories suspected of producing substandard beverages. 

Among those arrested are Samuel Ntihanabayo, commonly known as Kazungu, the former Managing Director of Ingufu Gin Ltd; Fulgence Twahirwa, who was responsible for quality control at the company; and Donias Katushabe, who was in charge of production.

At Kerry Taste & Nutrition Rwanda Ltd, those arrested include Oluwatosin Ajayi, who was responsible for operations; Belinda Kayihura Mudahogora, who oversaw production; and Peter Hamuduni, who was responsible for product distribution. 

Other suspects include Juvenal Ndayisenga, owner of Bio Hap Ltd; Eric Gatare, owner of Ebeneser Company Ltd; Alexandre Bereti, who was responsible for production at Sakaza Fruits Processing Ltd; Gilbert Safari, the company's manager; Olivier Uwishema, who was responsible for production at SinaGerard/Ese Urwibutso; and Beatrice Gahongayire, owner of Africana Buffalo Product Ltd, among others.

The arrests follow a wider government crackdown on substandard alcoholic beverages. In recent weeks, authorities have destroyed large quantities of beverages deemed unsafe, investigated their producers, distributors and sellers, and launched public awareness campaigns urging citizens to avoid consuming them.

Since the beginning of August, hundreds of litres of substandard beverages have reportedly been destroyed, while more than 140 factories suspected of producing them have been closed.

The crackdown comes amid growing concerns over the serious health consequences associated with consuming the beverages.

Health authorities say that since the beginning of 2026, more than 50 Rwandans have died and over 100 others have suffered vision loss, while more than 500 people are currently receiving medical care in connection with the consumption of the beverages.

The referral of the 78 case files to prosecutors is expected to pave the way for further legal proceedings against those suspected of involvement in the production and distribution of unsafe alcoholic drinks.

The case has attracted attention because of the punishment provided under Rwandan law for issuing a cheque without sufficient funds.

Under the law, a person convicted of knowingly issuing a cheque without sufficient funds may face between two and five years in prison, as well as a fine ranging from five to ten times the amount written on the cheque.

This means that if Shema Ngoga is found guilty, he could potentially face a prison sentence of up to five years, in addition to the applicable fine.

However, it is important to note that Shema has not been convicted or sentenced to five years in prison. The five-year figure is the maximum punishment provided by law for the offence if a person is found guilty. His case remains under investigation, and any decision on prosecution and punishment will depend on the outcome of the legal process.

Shema Ngoga became FERWAFA president in August 2025 after being elected for a four-year term. Before taking the position, he was known for his leadership of AS Kigali and his involvement in Rwandan football.

His arrest has therefore drawn considerable attention within the country’s football community, particularly because he is the head of Rwanda’s national football governing body.

For now, the investigation remains ongoing, and Shema should legally be regarded as a suspect rather than someone who has been found guilty. Further developments are expected as authorities continue examining the allegations against him.

Alongside Malawi, three other nations have reached the semifinals and secured their places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Cameroon advanced after defeating Nigeria 1-0, Algeria eliminated Côte d’Ivoire 2-1, while hosts Morocco booked their place in the last four with a 2-1 victory over South Africa.

As a result, Malawi, Cameroon, Algeria and Morocco will represent Africa at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Brazil from June 24 to July 25, 2027.

While Malawi celebrates a historic achievement, the tournament has brought disappointment for Nigeria, the defending African champions.

Nigeria’s defeat to Cameroon means the team will have to play a playoff match to keep its hopes of qualifying for the 2027 Women’s World Cup alive.

The elimination is also historic for Nigeria. Since the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations began, this is the first time the country has failed to reach the semifinals. 

Despite the setback, Nigeria remains the most successful team in the history of African women’s football. Out of the 14 editions of the tournament played so far, Nigeria has won the title 10 times, a record that underlines its dominance on the continent.

The semifinal matches are scheduled for Wednesday, with Malawi facing Algeria, while hosts Morocco will take on Cameroon.

The 30-year-old midfielder received an invitation from Jwaneng Galaxy and is expected to sign a two-year contract, subject to the completion of the final formalities.

If the move is completed, Mugisha will reunite with Belgian coach Ivan Minnaert, who recently took charge of Jwaneng Galaxy after leaving Uganda's Vipers, whom he guided to the Ugandan Premier League title. 

The potential reunion is particularly interesting because Minnaert and Mugisha have worked together before. The two were part of Rayon Sports in 2018, making their return together a familiar one.

Mugisha joined APR FC in 2021 and played an important role in the club's domestic success, helping the team win several trophies. He was also part of the APR side that made history by winning both the league title and the Peace Cup in the same season, a feat the club achieved in two consecutive campaigns.

His expected arrival comes as Jwaneng Galaxy looks to strengthen its squad under Minnaert. The Belgian coach brings extensive experience in African football, having won league titles in different parts of the continent, including North and East Africa.

One of Minnaert's key duties will be to guide Jwaneng Galaxy to the Botswana Premier League title. Last season, the club finished second, five points behind champions Gaborone United.

However, Jwaneng Galaxy is far from a minor force in Botswana football. The club has already won the country's domestic cup, earning the right to represent Botswana in the CAF Confederation Cup.

However, the City said that some of the issues remain unresolved. One of the most serious concerns was identified on August 7, 2026, and involved the management of wastewater from the building’s toilets. The City found that wastewater was being discharged directly onto wetlands. 

The City of Kigali stated: “The building will remain closed until all the identified violations have been addressed and an inspection has been conducted by the relevant authorities.”

The authorities called on the building’s management to urgently address all the outstanding issues so that the building can be reopened as soon as possible. The City noted that many people operate businesses in the building and rely on those businesses to support themselves and their families. 

The City of Kigali also reminded businesses and residents across the city that proper management of wastewater generated through daily activities is essential. Discharging wastewater into protected areas such as wetlands harms the environment and is prohibited by law.

The authorities further warned that anyone found discharging wastewater into protected areas will face appropriate legal action in accordance with existing laws and regulations.

The 70-year-old opposition leader is facing charges related to alleged treason and an alleged plot to overthrow President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s government.

Besigye was rushed to an intensive care unit in Kampala on July 30 after collapsing and losing consciousness during a court hearing. Before he collapsed, he strongly protested the proceedings, saying he had no confidence in the fairness of his trial.

Shortly before the incident, Besigye had also challenged a court decision to appoint lawyers to represent him. This followed the arrest of his lawyer, Elias Lukwago, who was accused of offences similar to those facing Besigye. Another member of his legal team, Kenyan lawyer and former Justice Minister Martha Karua, was reportedly barred from entering Uganda.

Byanyima has repeatedly condemned the conditions under which her husband is being held, describing his treatment as inhumane. She has also previously alleged that there are plans within the Ugandan government to kill her husband.

Besigye’s return to prison is likely to renew concerns among his supporters and human rights advocates over his health, treatment in detention, and the conduct of his ongoing trial.

The match went into extra time after the two sides were locked at 1–1 following the regulation 90 minutes.

Rayon Sports took the lead in the 27th minute through their striker Junior Kameni, who put his side ahead with a well-taken goal. Gor Mahia responded in the 53rd minute when Sharif Sabuni Sirengo found the back of the net to level the contest.

With neither side able to break the deadlock during normal time, the match went into an additional 30 minutes. Rayon Sports eventually found the decisive goal in the 98th minute through Daniel Muhoza, whose strike sealed a dramatic 2–1 victory and crowned Rayon Sports champions.

The final was preceded by the third-place play-off between Al-Hilal of Sudan and Jamus of South Sudan. 

Al-Hilal secured third place after defeating Jamus 2–1.

The final between Rayon Sports and Gor Mahia was attended by Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva, who also presented the awards to the best performing teams at the conclusion of the tournament.

Following the historic victory, several Rwandan government officials sent congratulatory messages to Rayon Sports. Among them were Minister of Health Sabin Nsanzimana, Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Sports Rwego Ngarambe, among other officials.

Former government officials also joined the celebrations, congratulating the club on its achievement. They included former Health Minister Diane Gashumba, former Sports Minister Aurore Munyangaju Mimosa, and former Minister of Local Government Anastase Shyaka, among others.

Rayon Sports had last won the CECAFA club championship in 1998, when they defeated Mlandege of Zanzibar 2–1. That remained the club's only CECAFA title until this year's triumph. 

The 2026 victory is historic for another reason: it is the first time Rayon Sports have won the CECAFA title on Rwandan soil.

It is also the club's first CECAFA triumph since the tournament began receiving the support of President Paul Kagame in 2002. 

Rayon Sports' historic campaign was rewarded with $30,000 in prize money for winning the tournament.

Runners-up Gor Mahia received $20,000, while third-placed Al-Hilal were awarded $10,000.

For Rayon Sports and their passionate supporters, the victory was more than just another trophy. It was a landmark achievement on home soil, and a perfect way to celebrate Umuganura, a traditional feast similar to Thanks giving.

During the ceremony, several speakers paid tribute to Senator Mukabalisa's dedication, exemplary leadership, and lasting contribution to Rwanda's development.

First Vice President of the Liberal Party (PL), Hon. Théogène Munyangeyo, described the late senator as a welcoming, hardworking, and selfless leader who consistently put the interests of Rwanda and its citizens first. 

"She leaves us with a legacy of loving our work, striving for excellence, exercising wisdom, remaining steadfast, and carrying out our responsibilities efficiently. She always placed the interests of Rwandans and Rwanda above everything else," he said.

Munyangeyo also reflected on the difficult periods Mukabalisa endured throughout Rwanda's painful history, including the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. He noted that those experiences strengthened her resolve to dedicate herself to the country's recovery and development.

He encouraged Rwandans not to lose hope, saying that although the nation had lost an exceptional leader, Rwanda would continue to produce men and women with the same values and commitment.

"The country has lost an outstanding woman, but we have no doubt that it will continue to produce patriotic leaders who will carry forward the values she stood for and continue the work she began," he added.

President of the Senate, Doctorr François-Xavier Kalinda, also paid tribute to the late senator, describing her as a compassionate, humble, and patriotic leader who never hesitated to make decisions in the country's best interest.

"We have lost a wise leader who never feared making decisions for the good of the nation. She was humble, thoughtful, dedicated, and admired for her kindness and gentle character. Senator Donatille Mukabalisa truly embodied humanity," he said. 

Doctor Kalinda thanked President Paul Kagame for his message of condolence to the bereaved family and expressed appreciation to everyone who sent messages of sympathy to Rwanda's bicameral Parliament.

A message from President Paul Kagame, who is also the Chairman of the RPF Inkotanyi, was delivered by Ambassador Christophe Bazivamo, the RPF Inkotanyi’s Secretary General.

In his message, President Kagame praised Senator Mukabalisa for the values that defined her public service, including integrity, humility, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to duty.

"Senator Donatille Mukabalisa embodied the values that have become the foundation of Rwanda's development, including integrity, humility, resilience, and a strong sense of responsibility. Throughout the many positions of trust she held, she fulfilled every duty with dedication and excellence."

President Kagame added that Rwanda would always remember Senator Mukabalisa for both her achievements and the exemplary leadership she demonstrated throughout her career.

"The legacy she leaves behind will continue to be reflected in the work she accomplished and in the example of good leadership she has given us."

Senator Donatille Mukabalisa began her parliamentary career in 2000, serving as a Member of Parliament until 2011. She then served in the Senate from 2011 to 2013 before returning to the Chamber of Deputies, where she served as Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies for two consecutive terms from 2013 to 2024.

In June 2024, she re-joined the Senate as one of the senators representing the Forum of Political Organizations in Rwanda. 

Among the milestones for which she will be remembered is her leadership during the 2015 constitutional amendment process, when Parliament received more than 3.7 million petitions from citizens requesting amendments to constitutional provisions on presidential term limits. She also oversaw the parliamentary process that culminated in the referendum approving those amendments.

She will also be remembered for championing legislation that improved the lives of many Rwandans, particularly laws governing matrimonial property, inheritance, and succession, which strengthened women's and girls' rights to own and inherit property by removing longstanding legal barriers.

Following the official farewell ceremony, a Requiem Mass was celebrated at Regina Pacis Parish in Remera. Senator Donatille Mukabalisa was later laid to rest at Rusororo Cemetery, where family members, friends, colleagues, and dignitaries gathered to bid her a final farewell.

At 41 years old, Father Mutabazi becomes the first Rwandan to lead SIGNIS Africa. He succeeds Father Walter Chikwendu Ihejirika of Nigeria, who served as president for the past eight years.

Father Mutabazi will serve a four-year term, renewable once.

Speaking shortly after his election, he said his priority would be to strengthen collaboration among Catholic media organizations across Africa by fostering sustainable partnerships, encouraging the sharing of resources, and promoting mutual support.

"Our main focus will be to build a strong network of Catholic journalists and media organizations across Africa, especially in Central Africa and Rwanda, through resource sharing, lasting partnerships, and mutual support," he said.

Father Mutabazi currently serves as the Executive Secretary of the media commission at the Rwanda Catholic Episcopal Conference (CEPR). He is also the director of Kinyamateka, a Rwandan Catholic church newspaper.

A priest of the Diocese of Kabgayi, Father Mutabazi was ordained on August 2, 2014. He began his pastoral ministry at Collège Sainte Marie Reine Kabgayi from 2014 to 2015.

Between 2015 and 2019, he served at Mushishiro Parish while pursuing studies in Journalism and Communication at the Institut Catholique de Kabgayi (ICK). After completing his studies, he was appointed as the director of Kinyamateka.

Father Mutabazi joined SIGNIS Africa in 2021. A year later, he was elected to represent Central Africa on the organization's governing board, a role that paved the way for his election as President of SIGNIS Africa.

The funding will support the implementation of the HANGARIBIHE programme over the next five years. The initiative is designed to promote climate-smart agricultural practices, expand irrigation infrastructure, improve the use of quality seeds, strengthen soil and natural resource conservation, enhance agricultural research, and help farmers adapt to the growing impacts of climate change.

Speaking after the signing, Minister Yusuf Murangwa said the agreement would help Rwanda accelerate the transformation of its agricultural sector by increasing productivity while improving the livelihoods of citizens. EU Ambassador Belen Calvo Uyarra reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to supporting Rwanda's sustainable development agenda, particularly in agriculture, environmental protection, and climate resilience.

The agreement further strengthens the long-standing partnership between Rwanda and the European Union, which has supported development initiatives in sectors including agriculture, education, health, governance, and environmental conservation. The new investment is expected to boost agricultural productivity, enhance food security, and reinforce Rwanda's efforts to build a more resilient and sustainable economy.

Thousands of fans filled BK Arena over the two nights, singing along to some of King James’ biggest hits, including Naratomboye, Hari Ukuntu, Nzakubona Ryari, Ni Iki Utabona, and Inzozi. The concerts opened with a performance by King V, while DJ Arthur entertained the audience before King James took to the stage.

One of the highlights of the celebration came when Zuba Rey and Ariel Wayz joined King James on stage to perform songs they have collaborated on, drawing loud cheers from the packed arena and adding to the excitement of the anniversary celebration.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Jean Paul Ndagijimana, Country Director of AGRA Rwanda, described the partnership as an important milestone in advancing Rwanda's agricultural transformation.

"This Memorandum of Understanding may be a simple document, but it represents a bold and ambitious vision. As a country with limited arable land, Rwanda must produce more from less. Together with our partners, we are committed to helping farmers increase productivity, improve their incomes, and create dignified and rewarding opportunities that attract more young people into agriculture," he said.

Dr. Sunita Pitamber, Chief Operating Officer of Oath Africa, noted that the partnership is already delivering results, with implementation activities underway, including the training of 120 lead farmers and agronomists.

"We are proud to partner with AGRA to accelerate the adoption of innovative soil health solutions in Rwanda. Together, we can equip farmers with practical technologies that restore soil fertility, boost productivity, and create lasting economic opportunities for farming communities. This partnership is about delivering measurable impact where it matters most on farmers' fields," she said.

Through the partnership, AGRA and Oath Africa will work to scale innovative soil health technologies, strengthen farmer capacity, and promote regenerative agricultural practices that improve productivity while safeguarding natural resources. Particular emphasis will be placed on empowering young farmers and supporting climate-resilient agricultural systems that contribute to Rwanda's long-term food security and economic development.

By combining AGRA's expertise in agricultural systems transformation with Oath Africa's innovative soil health technologies, the partnership aims to help Rwanda's farmers produce more from limited land, improve livelihoods, and advance a more sustainable and inclusive agri-food system.

The list attached to the announcement released by the Rwanda FDA shows that the factories that were closed are Ingufu jin Ltd, NBG LTD, Sky Drop Industries Ltd, Africana Buffalo Ltd, Nopa Company Ltd, Roots Investment Group Ltd, Rugali Agro-Processing Company and Zhonglu Industrial Liability Company Ltd. 

The directives contained in the notice indicate that these industries must immediately stop producing and distributing their beverages from the date of the notice, and that retailers selling beverages produced by these industries across the country must also immediately return them to the industries and stop selling them to the public. Rwandans are also asked to immediately stop buying and drinking beverages produced by these industries.

These factories were also asked to submit a report on the collection of their produced beverages within three working days after the announcement of the decision, in order to monitor their market performance.

Rwanda FDA concluded by stating that the review and inspection of alcoholic beverage factories is ongoing, meaning that at any time, the list of factories producing substandard beverages may include other factories.

The closure of all eight factories follows a long-standing problem of drugs and substandard alcohol across the country, with the latest figures released by the Minister of Local Government, Habimana Dominique, on July 29, 2026, showing that since the beginning of this year, about 50 Rwandans have died after drinking illicit and substandard alcohol.

The aim is to ensure that primary school teachers are up to date with current educational standards and have university-level qualifications. 

“In the program, we will upgrade the category of primary school teachers so that in the future teachers will have a university-level qualification, but we will do this in two stages. Those with A2 will be upgraded to A1, those with secondary school diplomas will be upgraded to A1, and the secondary school will go from A1 to A0. We will do this in 10 years,” Minister Joseph Nsengiyumva said.

Students who wish to study in TTCs will be given time to consider this change, and then decide whether to continue studying in those schools or if they will study elsewhere. It is also expected that current primary school teachers who do not have university degrees will not be fired, but will be provided with courses to help them sharpen the skills needed to perform well.

In the current timetable, time will be added for students to do various activities, so that they can accelerate their skills according to the subjects being taught. 

The Ministry of Education has announced that the starting times of classes will not change, but the ending time will change. All teachers will finish teaching at 3:30 pm, while students will be left to do activities that help them understand what they have been taught and return home at 5:00 pm as usual.

This will be done from Monday to Thursday, and on Friday,students will return home at 3:30 pm, while teachers will be left to do other activities aimed at improving their work. 

Specifically, Minister Nsengiyumva spoke about the extracurricular activities that students received, saying, "It's a way to reinforce what you've learned without sitting in class. For example, in English, when you sit in class, they teach you grammar, but the extracurricular activities are going to debate clubs. We didn't do that before." 

In addition to helping children better understand and comprehend what they are being taught, the Ministry of Education believes that these activities will help students improve their relationships with each other. 

Another change announced by the Ministry of Education is the increase in the parental contribution, where the contribution paid for a primary school student's meal was increased from 975 Rwandan francs to 2,000 Rwandan francs.

For secondary school students who go home, the parental contribution, which was Rwf 19,500, will be increased to Rwf 24,000, while for secondary school students who are boarded, the parental contribution, which was Rwf 85,000, will be increased to Rwf 110,000. The government will also support meals provided to students at all levels. 

Speaking about this change that will come into effect from January 2027, Minister Nsengiyumva said, "These figures reflect how prices have changed. For example, in schools where the prices were higher than 120 thousand Rwf, but because it was already high, we are saying that the Government will help so that it does not exceed 110 thousand Rwf." 

Another request from the Ministry of Education is to increase politeness and avoid bad behaviour in schools, as it affirms that school should be a place where learning takes place, it should be a safe place and those who work there should be characterized by good morals. 

Minister Nsengiyumva confirmed that one of the most prevalent problems in schools, whether among students, teachers or other school staff, is the use of alcohol and drugs. Minister Nsengiyumva said that anyone caught with alcohol or drugs will be immediately expelled. 

“Schools should be a place where alcohol and drugs are not allowed. They should not be seen there. Anyone caught doing so at school, whether a student, teacher, principal, or kitchen staff, will be immediately expelled. Students, because we have to help children, we will work with local authorities to help them outside of school,” Minister Nsengiyumva spoke about the matter. 

Another issue raised by Minister Joseph Nsengiyumva is the behaviour of some students, where they engage in violent acts at school, fight, or injure their peers, sometimes even beating their teachers.

“Another example I can give you is when children come to school and fight, injure others, and you find a child who was injured in a fight and goes to the hospital. In addition to that, there are also children who beat teachers. Things like bringing violence to school, fighting, beating teachers, cannot be tolerated. That child will also be expelled and assisted in other programs outside of school,” he insisted. 

Minister Nsengiyumva added that such bad behaviour cannot be tolerated, because a student who hits a teacher may go home and hit his/her parents, especially since teachers and school principals are considered as parents. 

“We cannot train students to come to school and fight with teachers and have them accept it. These people will also go home and start hitting their parents. We cannot accept that.,” he added. 

Minister Joseph Nsengiyumva also addressed the issue of some students carrying their phones to school to cheat in exams. Minister Nsengiyumva reminded that a student caught with a phone in an exam should be given a zero, and stressed that bringing a phone to school in general is unacceptable. 

“Even if it is just one or two, it must be stopped. Because all our efforts to improve the quality of education without propermanners will not be successful,” he said.

Teachers are also reminded to improve their work and educate with all their heart and energy, because quality education is the first to benefit them.

Infantino's decision follows the resignation of his former senior advisor on global strategies and governance, Carlos Cordeiro. 

Carlos Cordeiro, resigned, saying that Gianni Infantino's project is inappropriate and will damage the future of football. 

Gianni Infantino wanted all 211 members to support the project and each football association to receive the funds worth $40 million, which is about 60 billion Rwandan francs. 

Most FIFA members didn’t support the project, because on Thursday this week, all 55 members of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) voted that if the project goes ahead, they will be withdrawn from the World Cup.

Such a decision was supported by members of the Confederation of North and Central American Football Associations (CONCACAF) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). 

Members of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) planned to discuss the project this August, but CAF president Patrice Motsepe had signaled his support for Gianni Infantino's plans. 

Members of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) were also due to discuss the project in August, while the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has asked FIFA for more details on the project.

It seems that Gianni Infantino is having a hard time winning the trust of FIFA members as he seeks a fourth term as FIFA president, as not only some football federation leaders are not supportive of him, but also some politicians on the European continent have shown signs of criticizing him. For example, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said that Infantino is not the right person to continue leading FIFA.

The FIFA presidential election is scheduled to take place in March 2027, in Morocco, where the FIFA Congress will be held.

It is reported that in the elections, Gianni Infantino may face the Qatari businessman and also the French club Paris Saint-Germain’s CEO, Nasser al-Khelaifi.

The late Hon. Donatille Mukabalisa, who was born in Bugesera district in the Eastern Province, told us that she was saddened by her childhood linked to her birth period during the darkest history of Rwanda, which culminated in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.  

"There are many sad memories I remember from the pre-genocide period. There was the persecution, harassment, and torture that was inflicted on parents and neighbors,” she said.

Hon Donatille Mukabalisa told us that this happened to her too, because a company wanted to hire her because they saw hertalent, but when she showed the identity card used at the time, the job became immediately annulled, because the identity card indicated that she was Tutsi.

Despite having lived in a difficult life, Hon. Donatille Mukabalisa told us that the happiest thing about her childhood was that she attended high school, in a good school, and then continued on to university.

Although Hon. Donatille Mukabalisa went through difficulttimes in her history, she revealed to us the secret that made her an exemplary leader. 

“The gravity of not giving a talented child the right to study to develop himself/herself, to develop his/her family, to develop his/her country, to have a place in schools and in the workplace, all of which you strive to ensure will never happen again, and that people come together and establish a sustainable and strong system that will not waver, so that there is a strong foundation so that the bitter history our country has gone through will never happen again,” she said.

In the context of building a stable democracy in Rwanda, Hon. Donatille Mukabalisa laid her foundation, where she contributed to the development of the Liberal Party (PL), after it was founded on July 14, 1991. She did not stop there because she also joined the Chamber of Deputies from 2003 to 2008, and from 2011 to 2013 she continued in the Senate. 

After returning to the House of Representatives and leading it from 2013 to 2024, many memorable events took place. Among the events that Hon. Donatille shared with us was a major event that took place between 2014 and 2015, when Rwandans called on the House of Representatives to initiate steps towards amending the constitution, particularly in the articles that would allow them to elect a leader they wanted to continue leading them.

She told us what it was like at that time, especially when it came to receiving letters from citizens.

“It started out small. We started receiving about one letter a day, which was normal, then two more came, a week later two more, but then it started to come in large numbers! Then people started coming with their own letters, wanting to meet with us to tell us what was on their minds and to show why they wanted this article to be changed so that we could continue to be led by His Excellency the President of the Republic Paul Kagame,” she said.

In addition to the constitutional amendment, some of the things that Hon. Donatille Mukabalisa shared with us that pleased herduring his time as Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies include enacting laws in line with the political line the country has given itself, holding certain leaders accountable without trying to discredit them, but rather to show them where they need to be strengthened so that the desired results can be achieved. She also told us that she was pleased that members of parliament decided to travel around the country in groups and to go to many places at the same time, to advocate for the people, and she was pleased that this decision helped the leadership in resolving the problems that were being raised.

During our conversation, Hon. Mukabalisa also expressed herhappiness over the progress the country has made, including the reduction of the number of people living below under poverty, rapid economic growth, and the promotion of gender equality.

Hon Donatille Mukabalisa, concluded the interview by reminding the youth that they have a great responsibility to preserve the achievements and build on them to develop the country. 

“The young people are in a good country and they have a great responsibility. You can build a house for someone, take it to a place and tell them to continue because I have built a strong foundation, build it. At that time, you have no limits to build on. At that time, if you fail, you are a coward, but again, there is no reason to fail because you have good things to build on and now in a good country that gives you full rights,” she said. 

"What I would tell them is to work with purpose, learn from the difficulties they encounter because they are also constructive, but also from the good things they see and say, 'How can we continue to innovate and improve?" She added.

"He is unconscious, unable to speak, and unresponsive even to a pain stimulus," his wife Winnie Byanyima, who is also the head of the United Nations agency fighting against HIV and Aids (UNAids), wrote on X's social media account.

Kizza Besigye, who ran unsuccessfully for president in Uganda four times against President Yoweri Museveni, was arrested in Kenya in 2024 and immediately extradited to Uganda.

Kizza Besigye and his aide Obeid Lutale, are not only accused of treason, but also of plotting to overthrow the current government, which they both deny.

The crime of treason is a serious crime in Uganda, and if Kizza Besigye is convicted by a court, he could face the death penalty.

Witnesses in court on Wednesday said that before Kizza Besigyecollapsed, he first told the judges, "Stop, stop!"

"Before he collapsed, he was saying he was injured," Winnie Byanyima wrote, adding that Kizza Besigye's sister, Olive Kobusingye, who is a doctor, was also in court but was not allowed to take care of her brother.

Kizza Besigye was immediately rushed to Mulago Hospital, the largest government hospital in Uganda, but he refused to be treated by a government doctor. 

"He will not allow any government official to touch him," Byanyima said. 

Winnie Byanyima demanded that Besigye be allowed to receive treatment from his personal physician at a private clinic rather than at a government health facility. 

The intensive care unit where Kizza Besigye is being treated is under heavy security by soldiers and heavily armed police. Sources from Uganda confirm that Olive Kobusingye, who is Kizza Besigye's sister and personal doctor, has now been allowed to see her brother. 

This is not the first time Kizza Besigye has been hospitalized after being arrested, as in February 2025, he was rushed to a private hospital after noticing that his health was deteriorating. This was after he went on a hunger strike to protest his arrest. Earlier this year, 2026, he was also hospitalized, although not for long.

Kizza Besigye, who served as President Yoweri Museveni's personal doctor, had a falling out with him since 1999, which led to the politician forming an opposition party in 2004 called the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). He left the party in February 2024 and formed another in August of that year, calling it the People's Front for Freedom (PFF).

In the past few years, Kizza Besigye has not been very visible in political activities, and did not even contest the 2021 Ugandan presidential elections.

The country has shown that since the International Criminal Court began its work in 2002, out of the 13 cases it has prosecuted, 9 of them involved Africans, while only 4 involved people from anywhere else in the world.

Chad, located in North Central Africa, became the fifth country in the world to take such a decision in the past few months, and the fourth in Africa, because in September 2025, the three countries that formed their own alliance called the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), namely Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali, also took a similar decision, accusing the court of selective justice.

This ssimultaneous withdrawals from the International Criminal Court comes after days of pressure on the court by the administration of US President Donald Trump, after the court issued international arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

It seems that the United States administration has launched an open war on the International Criminal Court, as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced last week that his country is going to launch a campaign aimed at crippling the court's ability to function. 

After Marco Rubio's statement, Chad became the second country in the world to announce its complete withdrawal from the court, after Venezuela announced a similar decision on Friday, accusing the court of bias, according to Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodriguez, who is leading the country under US nodd.

The Chadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed on its website that the decision to begin the process of withdrawing from the International Criminal Court was taken at the request of the United States of America.

The ministry confirmed that the US deputy Secretary of State for African affairs has asked the country to reconsider its membership in the court.

"The United States side expressed concerns about the functioning of the court and called on the State of Chad to consider its withdrawal from the Rome Statute," the Ministry’s statement said.

A few days ago, the former chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Karim Khan, was dismissed from his post on charges of misconduct, yet his side, which also helped him in issuing an international arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu,claims that his dismissal was politically motivated.

The International Criminal Court was established in 2002 to try individuals who committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. It was the first court to be granted this authority, but it required member states to arrest those for whom the court had issued arrest warrants and transfer them to its headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands.

Before the series of withdrawals from the court, only Burundi withdrew from the court in 2017, followed by the Philippines in 2019, and Hungary did so before Benjamin Netanyahu visited it.

This announcement comes after the Cabinet meeting chaired by His Excellency the President of the Republic Paul Kagame on July 24, 2026, was briefed on the initiative called "Migrating telecommunications infrastructure from 2G and 3G to 4G and 5G. 

A statement released this week by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and Innovation states, “These changes will allow the infrastructure used to distribute old dual networks to be dedicated to telecommunications companies to increase their capacity to distribute 4G network, and later to distribute 5G network across the country.”

The Ministry also states that the shutdown of 2G and 3G communications will occur after conducting an assessment of the coverage area in the country, the continued provision of related services, the availability of equipment, and whether consumers are ready to migrate to modern networks.

Officials believe that these changes will improve the quality of internet speed, calling, mobile money services, and access to other digital services such as e-Government, education, and health platforms. 

The Ministry of ICT and Innovation also announced that telecommunications service providers and Rwandans in general will be assisted in these changes.

The trial of completely shutting down older networks began in 2026, before 3G network becomes completely shut down next year.

Consumers are also urged to check whether their phone numbers or devices can support 4G communications and to upgrade to 4G network for those who have not yet done so. Companies or institutions that only rely on 2G or 3G are also urged to start upgrading to the modern networks.

The demonstrations have spread across several cities, particularly in the capital, New Delhi, where thousands of students and young people have taken to the streets calling for transparency, justice and comprehensive reforms to the country’s examination system.

Many of the protesters are organised under a youth movement known as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). They say they will continue demonstrating until the government introduces lasting reforms, holds those responsible for the examination irregularities accountable, and releases protesters who were detained during earlier demonstrations.

Although the resignation of the Education Minister is being viewed as a significant response to public pressure, protest leaders insist that it is only the beginning. They maintain that the demonstrations will continue until all promised reforms are fully implemented, including stronger measures to prevent examination fraud and restore confidence in India’s education system.

In some areas, police have used tear gas and batons to disperse demonstrators, resulting in injuries and arrests. However, protests are continuing as the government holds discussions with representatives of the youth movement in an effort to ease tensions.

Political analysts say the demonstrations have become one of the most significant youth-led protest movements India has witnessed in recent years, highlighting growing concerns over education, unemployment and governance. The situation continues to attract international attention because of its potential political and social impact.

Other officials who received General Muhoozi Kayinerugaba included the commander of the Republican Guard, Major General Willy Rwagasana, and the Military Advisor at the Ugandan Embassy in Kigali, Colonel Ezekiel Matsiko.

In addition to meeting with President Paul Kagame, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba is expected to hold talks with various Rwandan military leaders in order to strengthen the existing good relations between the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) and the Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF).

This is not the first time that General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has visited Rwanda, as he last paid a working visit to Rwanda in March 2025. At that time, he held talks with various Rwandan military leaders on cooperation between the two countries' militaries, and also visited the Military Academy located in Nyakinama in Musanze District, Northern Province.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba gave lectures to students at the academy on cooperation between the militaries of African countries in order to maintain security on the African continent in general.

During the course, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba emphasized that when the Rwandan and Ugandan armies are united, no problem can stand in their way.

This is perhaps where development institutions create their greatest value. They reduce uncertainty. They generate confidence. They demonstrate feasibility. They help societies move from assumption to evidence.

Governments, in turn, perform a fundamentally different function. They institutionalise successful approaches through policy, regulation and public investment. Their legitimacy allows innovations to move beyond pilots and become part of national systems. Private enterprise performs yet another role. Itcommercialises innovation, mobilises investment, creates employment and sustains progress through competitive markets. None of these actors is sufficient on its own. Prosperity emerges only when each fulfils its complementary responsibility.

Seen in this way, Africa's development journey can be understood as a reinforcing progression rather than a collection of isolated interventions. Knowledge strengthens institutions. Strong institutions create confidence. Confidence attracts investment.Investment enables enterprise. Enterprise expands opportunity and productivity, creating the conditions for shared prosperity. The sequence is important because prosperity is rarely the consequence of a single intervention. It is the cumulative outcome of institutions, markets and leadership reinforcing one another over time.

One implication follows naturally from this argument. Development projects should be designed with the end in mind. Their ultimate purpose is not to become permanent delivery mechanisms but to create conditions under which they are nolonger required. Success should therefore be measured not only by outputs delivered or beneficiaries reached, but by whether institutions have acquired new capabilities, whether governments have adopted effective approaches, whether private enterprise has found commercially viable opportunities and whether communities are better positioned to sustain progress independently.

This also requires us to think differently about knowledge itself.Roads, ports and digital infrastructure remain essential foundationsof economic transformation, but Africa also requires a strongerknowledge infrastructure. The continent needs systems capable ofcapturing experience, preserving institutional memory and ensuring that successful ideas travel across borders, sectors and generations.Every successful intervention should strengthen Africa's collectivecapacity to solve future challenges rather than requiring each newinitiative to begin from the same starting point.

The same principle applies to political leadership. Democratictransitions are an essential feature of healthy societies, butprosperity depends upon continuity of national purpose. Governments will rightly pursue different priorities, yet stronginstitutions enable each administration to build upon rather than replace the progress of those that came before. Development becomes cumulative when institutions preserve learning, creating confidence for citizens, investors and entrepreneurs alike.

Narrative occupies an equally important place within thisarchitecture. Too often, narrative is viewed primarily as acommunications exercise. In reality, it performs an economic function. Narratives influence expectations, shape investor confidence and affect how societies perceive both risk and opportunity. They determine whether successful African innovations remain isolated examples or become recognisedmodels worthy of replication and investment. Yet narratives derive their credibility not from optimism alone but from evidence. The most compelling story Africa can tell is one grounded in demonstrable progress and institutions capable of sustaining it.

Agrifood systems provide one of the clearest opportunities todemonstrate this philosophy. Agriculture should no longer be viewed solely as a social sector or a poverty reduction instrument. Properly understood, agrifood systems connect production, manufacturing, finance, logistics, technology, retail and trade. Theycreate enterprises, generate employment and stimulate industrialisation. When knowledge generated across these systems is effectively institutionalised and supported by investment, agriculture becomes not merely a source of food security but a driver of economic transformation.

It is in this spirit that I begin The Prosperity Blueprint.

The essays that follow are not intended to present a definitiveprescription for Africa's future. Rather, they seek to contribute to aconversation already emerging across governments, businesses,universities, development organisations and communities throughout the continent. They are an invitation to think moredeliberately about the architecture required to convert knowledge into institutions, institutions into enterprise and enterprise into prosperity.

Africa has spent decades demonstrating what is possible.

Its next economic frontier will depend on whether it can transformthat accumulated knowledge into capable institutions, confidentmarkets and productive enterprises that create opportunity at scale.

Prosperity, in the end, is neither accidental nor inevitable. It is built through deliberate choices, sustained learning and institutionscapable of carrying one generation's knowledge into the nextgeneration's opportunity. If this series contributes, even modestly,to that shared endeavour, it will have achieved its purpose.

The Imbuto Hub is designed as a multi-purpose community center that will provide a wide range of services, including education and learning opportunities, health and wellness programs, sports and recreational activities, entrepreneurship and skills development, as well as other initiatives aimed at empowering young people and strengthening local communities.

During the launch, it was highlighted that the Hub will serve as a space where community members can learn, collaborate, nurture their talents, and gain practical skills that promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance. The facility is also expected to create new opportunities for youth while contributing to the social and economic development of Bugesera District.

The project was developed through a partnership between the Government of Rwanda, the Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB), and the Imbuto Foundation, reflecting a shared commitment to investing in people and creating sustainable opportunities for future generations.

The inauguration of the Imbuto Hub was one of the key highlights of the Foundation’s 25th anniversary celebrations, reaffirming its continued mission to empower communities and improve the lives of Rwandans through inclusive and impactful development programs.

During the debate, all the candidates will be questioned by diplomats, UN staff and representatives of civil society.

The President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, said the debate is a great opportunity to engage and assess the vision of leadership of each candidate. 

“This dialogue provides a great opportunity to exchange ideas, identify priorities and leadership perspectives of each candidate for this position, which is considered one of the most important in the world,” she said.

“In a world that is increasingly fragmented, the United Nations needs not only a unique leader who will bring the Organization into the 21st century, but also a leader who embodies a culture of inclusiveness, who is ready to uphold and maintain the United Nations charter and all of its three pillars,” she added.

The election of the Secretary-General of the United Nations comes at a time when the Organization is facing financial challenges and a loss of confidence from some members, including the administration of US President Donald Trump, who continues to accuse the Organization of waste, self-deprecation and failure to achieve its goals.

The United States has so far urged the organization to focus on one pillar, “peace and security,” but other member states have also stressed that its other two pillars, “human rights” and “development,” are equally important. 

The candidates running for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations are Michelle Bachelet of Chile, Maria Fernanda Espinosa of Ecuador, Rafael Grossi of Argentina, Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett of Guyana, and Macky Sall of Senegal.

The 15-nation Security Council is expected to meet in closed-doors on July 30, 2026, to elect their preferred candidate for the position. After that, a second round of voting will be held until one candidate secures nine votes, without a veto from any of the five permanent members.

Once the winning candidate is selected, the UN Security Council will forward him or her to the UN General Assembly for confirmation. If confirmed, he or she is expected to succeed Antonio Guterres on 1 January 2027.

The CECAFA Kagame Cup remains an important platform for promoting football development, nurturing young talent, and strengthening sporting relations among countries in the region. The tournament gives clubs an opportunity to compete at a higher level while allowing players to showcase their abilities to a wider audience.

The competition was officially established in 1974 and has now reached its 48th edition. Over the years, it has been hosted by several countries, including Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Zanzibar. Since 2002, the tournament has been known as the CECAFA Kagame Cup following sponsorship from the Government of Rwanda under President Paul Kagame. The 2025 edition, which was hosted in Tanzania, was won by Singida Black Stars after defeating Al Hilal SC of Sudan in the final.

Football fans across Rwanda and the East and Central African region are looking forward to the tournament, which is expected to bring exciting competition while continuing to strengthen regional unity through sport.

The halftime show was organized through a partnership between FIFA and Global Citizen to raise funds for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, an initiative aimed at improving access to education for children around the world. By performing without pay, the artists supported the charitable campaign and encouraged people across the globe to contribute to the cause.

While the performers were not paid for their appearances, FIFA covered all production costs associated with the show, including the stage, lighting, sound systems, technical equipment and other logistics required to deliver the performance.

The news has generated widespread discussion on social media, with many music and football fans expressing surprise that global stars such as Madonna, Justin Bieber, BTS and Shakira agreed to perform for free in support of a worldwide education initiative.

“For the past 25 years, Rwanda has been a model for Africa in improving the health sector. This country has shown that anything is possible when governments invest in technology that not only saves money, but also puts that technology in the hands of those who need it most,” he said. 

Bill Gates' visit to Rwanda comes months after the launch of a partnership between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and technology company OpenAI. The partnership aims to spread artificial intelligence solutions to healthcare infrastructure across the African continent, with Rwanda being the first country to launch the initiative.

As announced in January, the $50 million initiative is expected to deploy artificial intelligence solutions in over a thousand primary health care facilities and surrounding areas by 2028.

This initiative, which aims to support healthcare workers rather than replace them, is expected to help doctors diagnose illnesses more quickly, improve data storage, and support healthcare workers in making informed decisions.

“The health system in Rwanda is in very good shape. They are monitoring what they are doing, seeing clearly where they need to improve, and taking action at the right time,” he said. 

Bill Gates also stressed that since 2000, Rwanda has significantly reduced child mortality, with deaths of children under five years of age falling from 59,000 to 16,000 per year, a reduction of 73 percent.

“The quality of the health system and the timely introduction of vaccinations have led to this fantastic result,” Gates said. 

Rwanda had begun investing in healthcare technology. In April 2025, it launched the National Healthcare Intelligence Center (NHIC).

This framework was established to help primary health care, secondary health care, and hospital staff integrate information to facilitate patient monitoring, establish a robust system that ensures that funds invested in health systems are used efficiently, and help health leaders make appropriate decisions and strategies.

Rwanda is also known for having digitized primary health care, and in August this year, a paperless system will be implemented in all health care facilities, from primary health care facilities to major hospitals. It also uses technology called e-Ubuzima and e-Fiche which has enabled doctors to follow up on patients even if they are not the first to see them, and even if the patient no longer visits the health care facility, reducing travel costs and inconvenience.

In addition to high-level panel discussions, the event will feature exhibitions showcasing the latest renewable energy technologies, networking sessions, and technical visits to selected clean energy projects in Rwanda. These activities are expected to provide participants with an opportunity to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and build partnerships that support sustainable development.

Organizers say Rwanda continues to position itself as a regional leader in clean energy by investing in renewable sources such as solar, hydropower, and other environmentally friendly energy solutions. Hosting the summit is expected to reinforce the country’s commitment to sustainable development while attracting new investment and strengthening collaboration in Africa’s transition to clean energy.

The summit is being organized through a partnership between Energy Private Developers (EPD) and the Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA), alongside other development partners. It is expected to contribute to stronger regional cooperation, increased investment in renewable energy projects, and Africa’s broader efforts to achieve sustainable development through clean and reliable energy.

“Do not wait until you are 70 years old and start wondering yourself, what did I do? I wish I had known. I tell you now, understand this, and find a way to deal with it when you leave here,” he said.

He continued, “I often hear people talking about the popular thing today saying, ‘vibes’ or ‘good vibes.’. I don’t deny that, but you have to ask yourself, where do I stand? Why am I standing here?”

The president of the Republic of Rwanda, continued by saying, “Before we talk about ‘vibes’ let us first empower the space we are in. Indeed, do not focus on ‘vibes’ but rather focus on the foundation that enables you to have those vibes.” 

President Paul Kagame has said that a community cannot be built on momentary happiness, but rather must be supported by strong strategies that make that happiness last.

“You cannot build a community that is based on vibes alone, but a strong community is the one that can have vibes,” he said.

President Paul Kagame said that achieving personal and national goals requires a passion for action, not a reliance on accomplishments. 

“Nothing can be done by itself. Nothing comes from nothing,” he said.

The President of the Republic of Rwanda told the youth that the future of the country will be determined by their ability to develop themselves through education, good health and responsible choices.

“It is like planting a seed. If you plant a tree and give it what it needs to grow and survive, that tree will bear fruit. It is similar to persons. You have to do everything you can to gain knowledge and develop yourselves,” he said. 

President Kagame also warned the youth against using drugs and alcohol, saying that their effects are evident even though there are tricks used to hide them.

“The first people affected are the users. It also affects the wider communities. But it is something that can be fought. The first step in fighting it is to refuse to normalize it, refuse to glorify it and refuse to accept it.”

The President of the Republic of Rwanda also stressed that the youth’s role of developing the country's future is irreplaceable through innovation and commitment. 

"What we expect from you, as the youth, is to be the new Rwanda that the country desires. You hear people talking about innovation. Innovation comes from people who are healthy, knowledgeable and purposeful. Innovation helps build the people and build the country," he said. 

The President of the Republic of Rwanda Paul Kagame, has called on the youth to see themselves as key partners in building the country's future rather than as beneficiaries of what the country provides.

After convicting him of all these crimes, the Paris Court of Appeal confirmed that the 27-year prison sentence that Eugène Rwamucyo was sentenced to in the first trial in October 2024 remains in effect.

On June 9 2026, the appeal trial of Eugene Rwamucyo began. He had appealed to this court, claiming that he had no role in the killings that took place in the former Butare Prefecture, now in the Southern Province. 

During the hearing of both sides, Genocide survivors and other witnesses reiterated Rwamucyo's role in the killings in Butare Prefecture, with the prosecution stating that the evidence presented at the trial clearly shows that Rwamucyo played a role in the killings, and was one of those who expedited them.

Testimony and other court documents filed with the court show that Eugène Rwamucyo participated in meetings where the killings were planned. He is also accused of overseeing the burial of Tutsi who had been killed, and even ordering that the wounded be buried alive or burned.

Earlier this week, the French prosecution asked the court to increase Eugène Rwamucyo's sentence to 30 years in prison. The request was made on July 15, as the trial was about to close. Eugène Rwamucyo and his lawyers also filed grounds of appeal, requesting that Rwamucyo be acquitted, but the court decided to uphold the sentence Rwamucyo received in the first trial. 

In September 2009, the Huye Gacaca court tried Eugène Rwamucyo in absentia and sentenced him to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of involvement in the Genocide, where he was found guilty of planning and facilitating the killings committed during the Genocide against the Tutsi. 

After the genocide, Eugène Rwamucyo fled Rwanda and took refuge in Côte d'Ivoire, where he applied for refugee status through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), but his request was rejected.

He later moved to France, where he was given various positions in various hospitals in the country. In 2008, Eugène Rwamucyo was offered a permanent position at a hospital in Maubeuge, but his position was terminated in October 2009, when news of Eugène Rwamucyo's role in the Genocide against the Tutsi began to emerge. 

Through Interpol, Rwanda issued an international arrest warrant for Eugène Rwamucyo in 2007. At the same time, a French organization that aims to bring survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi to justice and bring perpetrators hiding in France to justice, known as the Collectif des Parties Civiles pour le Rwanda, asked the French government to launch an investigation into Rwamucyo.

In May 2010, French police arrested Eugène Rwamucyo in the Sannois area near Paris, while he was attending the funeral of Jean-Bosco Barayagwiza, one of the senior officials convicted of his involvement in the Genocide against the Tutsi by the former International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).

Although Rwanda requested France to extradite Rwamucyo to Rwanda, the Versailles court rejected this request and instead ordered his immediate release, which was done in September 2010.

The French authorities have decided to investigate him themselves. In 2013, the prosecution opened an investigation into Eugène Rwamucyo for his role in the Genocide against the Tutsi. In 2020, the French prosecution concluded that Rwamucyo should be tried for crimes related to his alleged role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, a decision upheld by France's investigation chamber in 2022.

The news was announced this week by Rwandan Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire, who said the project is part of Rwanda's policy to build more sports infrastructure and develop young talents through Rwanda's collaboration with some of the international sports bodies and teams playing various sports.

"Although the partnership between Rwanda and Arsenal has ended, they are going to build three football pitches in the country. We are currently assessing the areas that need these pitches most. This is a great opportunity for us," She said. 

Although Minister Nelly Mukazayire did not disclose other benefits that could come from Rwanda's collaboration with other teams to promote Visit Rwanda, it is expected that in building sports infrastructure in Rwanda, the Atlético de Madrid team, which plays in the first division of Spanish football, and the Los Angeles Clippers team, which currently plays in the NBA basketball competition in the United States of America, will both be involved.

According to the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), the partnership between Rwanda and Arsenal has helped Rwanda gain international recognition through various activities including the annual Rwanda Heritage Day held at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, and several visits by former Arsenal players and club ambassadors.

Former England international Alex Scott was the first Arsenal Ambassador to visit Rwanda after the launch of the partnership. She was followed by some of the club's current and former players, including Brazilian internationals David Luiz and Gilberto Silva, the former French international Robert Pirès and the Dutch international Jurriën Timber. 

Through the partnership between Rwanda and Arsenal, the Visit Rwanda program was promoted in various ways, including advertising Visit Rwanda through billboards placed at Arsenal's home games, advertising in the interview and press conference area, on digital platforms, and at the Emirates Stadium itself, which is visited by over 250,000 people each year.

The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) indicates that the tourism sector in Rwanda has improved significantly since the beginning of the partnership between Rwanda and Arsenal, as its revenue increased by 47 percent during the period of the partnership.

Figures for 2024 published by RDB show that over 1.3 million people visited Rwanda, while the tourism sector generated over $650 million, or approximately 941 billion Rwandan francs.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's decision has caused a seeming disagreement among military advisers in the country's conflict with Russia, as well as civil society.

President Zelenskyy, in a telephone conversation with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, acknowledged that there had been a "slight disagreement" in his country, but he confirmed that the conflict between Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and Ukrainian Army Chief of Staff Oleksandr Syrskyi was the reason for the dismissal of Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

On the other hand, President Zelenskyy called on the people to unite at this time when they are still facing Russia in a war that has been raging for more than four years. 

Those who closely follow Ukrainian politics believe that Mykhailo Fedorov, before taking the position of Minister of Defense, first volunteered in the country's army, which is why he gained great popularity among the population. 

The decision to dismiss Mykhailo Fedorov has not only sparked protests among the public, as some of his former colleagues have also decided to resign. For example, Pavlo Yelizarov, the deputy commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, resigned from his post in protest of Mykhailo Fedorov's dismissal.

In his previous statements, Burnham has expressed his commitment to strengthening the country’s economy, improving public services such as healthcare and education, and ensuring that economic opportunities reach all regions of the United Kingdom. He has also emphasized the importance of maintaining strong international partnerships and promoting national security.

Political analysts say the incoming Prime Minister will face several key challenges, including tackling the rising cost of living, stimulating economic growth, improving public finances, and restoring public confidence in the government.

As the transition of power approaches, both British citizens and the international community are closely watching to see how the new leadership will deliver on its promises and shape the future of the United Kingdom.

Before joining the Ministry of Sports, Brave Olivier Ngabo was the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Arts since December 2024, succeeding Candy Basomingera who was the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports.

Parfait Ishungure, who replaced Brave Olivier Ngabo as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Arts, became one of the senior officials in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. 

Brave Olivier Ngabo holds a Doctorate in Management studies (DMS) from Kazian School of Management (KMS) in India and a Master's degree in Marketing from the Rome Business School in Italy.

Parfait Ishungure holds a Master's degree in International Human Rights Law from the University of Nantes in France, and has also received advanced training in public administration from Institut National du Service Public located in Strasbourg, France.

Ntwali said the next phase requires stronger collaboration across the entire agri-food ecosystem.

“The solutions are with us in this room. We already see what is working. What we need now is to accelerate the journey for these young people. We need to approach this from a systems and ecosystem level, with shared measures and a common vision.”

He said the partnership is on track but must ensure every opportunity created leads to sustainable livelihoods.

“We are already past the 50 percent mark on this journey to 2030. If we maintain the current trajectory, we will achieve our targets. But we must go further and ensure that young people are accessing dignified and fulfilling work.”

Representing the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), Director General for Agriculture Dr. Patrick Karangwa described agriculture as central to Rwanda’s transformation.

“Agriculture is one of the highest priorities for this government. It is one of the areas where we see a great opportunity to transform lives.”

He praised the Foundation and its partners for investing in young people.

“We highly appreciate all the efforts you are putting towards this. What you are doing—Mastercard Foundation and all the partners—is very welcome.”

Jean Paul Ndagijimana, Country Director of AGRA Rwanda, said AGRA’s Super Aggregator role is to ensure that more than US$200 million invested through the portfolio delivers collective impact.

“The resources being invested should be talking to each other, not competing. We need collaboration, complementarity, and shared accountability.”

Partners echoed the call for stronger coordination.

TradeMark Africa Country Director Rosine Uwamariya said expanding markets is as important as increasing production.

“Market access is key. We may have production ready, but getting products from the farm to the market is where many challenges remain. We must address infrastructure gaps, trade barriers, standards compliance, access to finance, and market information so that young entrepreneurs can compete and grow.”

She said TradeMark Africa is helping enterprises formalize businesses, improve standards, and access local, regional, and international markets.

Andrew Rucyahana Mpuhwe, Director of Partnerships and Fundraising at Business Professionals Network (BPN) Rwanda, said the partnership has expanded BPN’s work to 18 districts and uncovered thriving informal businesses.

“This partnership has allowed us to expand our work to 18 districts and reach entrepreneurs we had never engaged before. We are discovering businesses generating significant revenues while operating informally, and our role is to help them formalize, grow, and create more opportunities for others.”

He called for greater collaboration to address the diverse needs of young entrepreneurs.

“The needs of an entrepreneur in Kigali are different from those of a refugee in Mahama or a young farmer in rural Rwanda. We need more collaboration, continuous learning, and flexible solutions that enable us to respond to those realities.”

The Steering Committee Meeting continues on Thursday with discussions on strengthening systems, improving results tracking, and agreeing on priorities to sustain impact beyond individual programmes. Last week’s Heads of Programs convening laid the technical foundation for these strategic discussions by identifying lessons and opportunities to strengthen coordination across the portfolio.

TradeMark Africa Country Director Rosine Uwamariya said expanding markets is as important as increasing production.

“Market access is key. We may have production ready, but getting products from the farm to the market is where many challenges remain. We must address infrastructure gaps, trade barriers, standards compliance, access to finance, and market information so that young entrepreneurs can compete and grow.”

She said TradeMark Africa is helping enterprises formalize businesses, improve standards, and access local, regional, and international markets.

Andrew Rucyahana Mpuhwe, Director of Partnerships and Fundraising at Business Professionals Network (BPN) Rwanda, said the partnership has expanded BPN’s work to 18 districts and uncovered thriving informal businesses.

“This partnership has allowed us to expand our work to 18 districts and reach entrepreneurs we had never engaged before. We are discovering businesses generating significant revenues while operating informally, and our role is to help them formalize, grow, and create more opportunities for others.”

He called for greater collaboration to address the diverse needs of young entrepreneurs.

“The needs of an entrepreneur in Kigali are different from those of a refugee in Mahama or a young farmer in rural Rwanda. We need more collaboration, continuous learning, and flexible solutions that enable us to respond to those realities.”

The Steering Committee Meeting continues on Thursday with discussions on strengthening systems, improving results tracking, and agreeing on priorities to sustain impact beyond individual programmes. Last week’s Heads of Programs convening laid the technical foundation for these strategic discussions by identifying lessons and opportunities to strengthen coordination across the portfolio.

The Dufatanye Youth Group is supported through the SERVE Project, a five-year (2023–2027) programme funded by the Mastercard Foundation under its Young Africa Works strategy. The programme aims to create and sustain 80,000 dignified and fulfilling work opportunities, with a strong focus on young women.

SERVE seeks to build a resilient, sustainable, gender-equitable and inclusive entrepreneurial environment that enables young people to realize their potential through opportunities in agricultural value chains. The programme is implemented by Care International in Rwanda through a consortium of four partners DUHAMIC-ADRI, Profemmes Twese Hamwe,Association of Microfinance Institutions in Rwanda (AMIR), and Urwego Finance targeting youth aged 18 to 35, including young women, persons with disabilities and refugees across 10 districts in Rwanda.

The programme focuses on strengthening youth participation in agricultural value chains including chili, tomatoes, French beans and poultry through skills development, financial inclusion, productive assets and market linkages.

Established in 2024 under SERVE, the Dufatanye Youth Group initially brought together young people engaged in horticulture and poultry farming. Through the project, members have received training, farming equipment, seeds, financial literacy support and access to markets, enabling them to develop sustainable agribusiness enterprises.

According to Niyomuhoza Brigitte, the group’s leader, many members initially joined without fully understanding the nature of the support they would receive.

“We were told there was a project coming to support young people, but we were not used to receiving support through agriculture. When some members realized they would not receive direct cash assistance, they decided to leave. Twenty-five of us chose to stay because we believed in the opportunity before us,” she recalled.

The remaining members embarked on a journey that transformed their understanding of agriculture. They received training in Good Agricultural Practices, financial management, leadership, market access, gender equality, safeguarding and inclusion. They were also supported with seeds, farming equipment and a greenhouse measuring 2.4 ares, while cultivating seven ares under open-field production.

“We started with a demonstration plot where we learned how to manage our resources, lead our group, calculate profits and expenses, and improve our agricultural practices. We received seeds and farming equipment, while local leaders supported us with land where our greenhouse was constructed,” Brigitte said.

Their first tomato harvest yielded 2.5 tonnes and generated approximately RWF 2.5 million from greenhouse and open-field production.

“The results surprised us because we had never imagined that such a small piece of land could generate that much income. It gave us confidence, and even those who had left the group started coming back after seeing what we had achieved,” she said.

Rather than spending their earnings, members invested in expanding their businesses. After setting aside RWF 940,000 for agricultural inputs for the next production season, they ventured into poultry farming by purchasing chicks at RWF 3,000 each. Every member received 16 chickens, including layers and broilers.

“The chickens have helped us improve household nutrition, fight child stunting and provide manure for our farms. We learned that every investment can create another opportunity if we plan well,” Brigitte explained.

The group continued to grow. During the second production season, members harvested 1.3 tonnes of sweet peppers from the greenhouse, generating RWF 1.8 million, while open-field carrot production generated an additional RWF 700,000. After deducting production costs, members shared profits amounting to RWF 1.3 million.

In another production cycle, the group harvested 2.7 tonnes of tomatoes, and their combined agricultural activities generated RWF 3.17 million in total revenue.

Driven by their success, members leased half a hectare of land for two years at a cost of RWF 800,000 to expand production. Today, the group employs two permanent workers, including a security guard and an irrigation attendant, alongside seven seasonal labourers, creating employment opportunities within the community.

For Twizerimana Germaine, a mother of two and one of the group’s members, the greatest contribution of SERVE has been knowledge.

“Before joining the project, I cultivated four ares of land, but I earned almost nothing because I lacked the necessary skills. The greatest thing we have gained from this project is knowledgeeven more valuable than the money we earn,” she said.

Through improved farming practices and investment, Germaine has expanded her farming activities to 32 ares and earns about RWF 1.5 million every season.

Speaking during the field visit, AGRA Rwanda Country Director Jean Paul Ndagijimana said the delegation came to listen directly to beneficiaries and understand how investments are translating into improved livelihoods.

“Many of the people who have come with me are senior leaders from our partner organizations. We came to see whether the support you receive is helping you achieve your goals and to listen to your testimonies so we can understand how your incomes and livelihoods are improving,” he said.

Dr. Patrick Karangwa, Director General of Agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), commended the young agripreneurs for their commitment.

“I thank you for your commitment and participation. We want to see farmers who do not give up but continue striving to achieve meaningful results. I also thank all our partners for their continued support. Let us keep moving forward together,” he said.

The journey of the Dufatanye Youth Group demonstrates how programmes such as SERVE are transforming agriculture into a pathway for dignified employment. From 25 young people who chose to believe in an opportunity, the group has become an example of what can be achieved when youth are equipped with skills, resources and partnerships to succeed.

Aston Villa becomes the second English club to partner with Visit Rwanda, after the previous partnership between Rwanda and Arsenal ends on June 30, 2026 after eight years.

"This is a great partnership for Aston Villa Football Club, and a sign of our continued growth and expansion into the international market," said Aston Villa's Chief Commercial Operations Officer Francesco Calvo after the announcement of the partnership.

“We see many opportunities that will come from this partnership, including learning, innovation, and we are ready to work closely with Visit Rwanda to showcase clear initiatives for tourism, investment, and sports development,” he added.

Visit Rwanda replaces the betting company Betano, which was used by Aston Villa on the players' shirts.

After eight consecutive years of Rwanda partnering with Arsenal on the Visit Rwanda initiative, the CEO of the Rwanda Convention Bureau (RCB) Janet Karemera, said that Rwanda’s new partnership with Aston Villa reflects Rwanda’s commitment to continue working with British clubs, as the country is one of the top tourist destinations in Rwanda.

“We are ready to work with Aston Villa to reach out to a wider audience in the UK, Europe and around the world. Through this partnership, we aim to strengthen our connections with those who want to visit Rwanda, such as tourists, investors or those who want to develop football in Rwanda in the long term,” Karemera said.

“This partnership is a true Rwandan way of reaching out to more people through some of their most common platforms, in order to demonstrate that our country is a great place to visit, invest and do business,” Karemera added.

In addition to the fact that Aston Villa will be using the Visit Rwanda logo on all of its team's home players’ shirts, it is expected that this partnership will promote Rwanda as a good destination for tourism, investment, business, conferences and other international events, as well as sports.

In addition to that, both sides will also collaborate on other activities including promoting football, training football coaches, projects to develop communities and charitable programs, projects to promote good leadership especially among youth, and other development-oriented projects.

According to figures released by NESA, 149,533 candidates will sit for the Ordinary Level examination, while 108,722 candidates will sit for the Advanced Level examination.

NESA has also indicated that among all registered candidates, the largest number is female, at 56.3 percent, while males account for 43.7 percent.

The national examinations will be conducted at all levels of Ordinary and upper secondary education, namely General Education (GE), Technical Secondary schools (TSS), Teacher Training Centres (TTC), Accounting (ACC), and Associate Nursing Program (ANP).

Of all registered candidates, 879 have disabilities, and NESA has assured that all will receive the necessary support and equipment to enable them to take the National exams at the same level as others.

These facilities include Braille examination papers, large printed examinations, scribes, extra time to take the examination, among others. Each candidate with a disability will be provided with these facilities and assistance based on their needs.

NESA is also pleased that there has been an increase in the number of candidates who will sit for the secondary school national examinations compared to the previous academic year of 2024-2025, as the number of candidates registered in that year was 255,624, thus representing an increase of 1 percent.

NESSA also took this opportunity to request parents and schools to continue to follow its official communication channels, so that they can receive information on exam schedules, instructions and other important updates during this exam period.

“Me and my husband have separated and we are in the process of divorcing,” she wrote.

As of Monday, July 13, 2026, Diamond Platnumz has yet to publicly respond to Zuchu's statement or comment on the news of their breakup.

This is not the first time the couple has been rumored to be breaking up. In November 2024, Zuchu announced that the couple had decided to amicably separate after three years of dating. At the time, she stated that their breakup would not affect their existing professional relationship, adding that they would continue to work together on their musical projects, but that she would focus on his personal recovery and developing his music career.

Not long after, the two were rumored to be in love again, to the point that Zuchu herself repeatedly announced that they were married. Their reconciliation was widely reported in the media, and their marriage was widely followed on social media, making the couple one of the most followed celebrity couples in the East African region.

During their relationship, Diamond Platnumz and Zuchu have collaborated on several hit songs, and have been the subject of numerous tabloid stories about their romance, marriage, and public appearances together. However, neither of them has yet to reveal the reason behind the rumors of their split.

At the Ryamirenge Home-Based ECD Centre, supported by AGRA and African Evangelistic Enterprise (AEE) Rwanda through the Mastercard Foundation-funded Youth Entrepreneurship for the Future of Food and Agriculture (YEFFA) programme, children spent the day learning, playing and receiving care while their parents focused on farming activities.

The centre serves 34 children—19 girls and 15 boys, including two children with disabilities—from across Ryamirenge Village. While many children are from families belonging to the Amahoro chilli producers’ group, the centre is open to all families in the community. Parents contribute a small monthly amount to support meals and daily operations, strengthening local ownership and sustainability.

The Amahoro chilli producers’ group comprises 16 farmers, including 11 women, who have received training through YEFFA on improved chilli production, nutrition, entrepreneurship and market access. With childcare support in place, women are able to spend more time on their farms, participate in trainings and improve agricultural productivity.

The Home-Based ECD Centre was established through collective community action. In 2017, women participating in AEE-supported agriculture and nutrition groups realised that childcare responsibilities were limiting their participation in farming. They decided to save transport allowances received during training sessions and, after one year, raised RWF 700,000 to establish the centre.

Jeanette Musabyemariya, a mother of six, community health worker and caregiver who volunteered her home to host the centre, said the initiative has transformed opportunities for women and children in the village.

“When AEE organised us into groups, we learned about nutrition, kitchen gardens and childcare. At that time, we monitored children’s growth under a tree. We realised that mothers could not increase their production while carrying children to the fields.”

“We decided to save the money we received during trainings, and after one year we built this Home-Based ECD Centre. Today, children are safe here while mothers attend trainings and work in their chilli fields,” she added.

For 23-year-old Divine Niyomwungeri, a teen mother and YEFFA participant whose one-year-old child attends the centre, access to childcare support has changed her ability to participate in farming.

“Before my child joined the ECD, I harvested very little because most of my time was spent caring for my baby. I missed farming activities, and my child was often unwell.”

“Now I work in my chilli field with peace of mind because I know my child is safe. I spend more time on my farm, my production has increased, and the income has enabled me to open a small boutique,” she said.

Divine added that the programme has also improved how she cares for her child.

“Through the programme, I learned how to prepare balanced meals and better care for my child. Seeing my child safe and healthy gives me confidence to continue improving my farming business.”

Another YEFFA participant, 19-year-old Diane Ingabire, said the Home-Based ECD centre helped her regain confidence after becoming a mother at a young age.

“I became a mother while I was still a teenager and lacked confidence. I did not know how to properly care for my child or myself. Through the ECD and YEFFA programme, I learned childcare, hygiene and improved farming practices.”

“Because my child is safe at the ECD, I can focus on farming. The extra time has increased my production and income. Today, I own three goats and four chickens that I bought from my farming earnings,” she said.

Diane said the support has given her hope for the future.

“I am grateful to AGRA and AEE for giving me an opportunity to improve my life and become more independent.”

The field visit reinforced the message that emerged during the convening: investing in childcare is also investing in agricultural productivity. By reducing unpaid care responsibilities, Home-Based ECD centres enable women, especially young women and teen mothers, to participate fully in farming, adopt improved practices, access markets and increase incomes while children benefit from quality care and nutrition.

As an implementing partner of YEFFA, AEE Rwanda has supported the establishment of Home-Based ECD centres through awareness creation, savings groups and community mobilisation. The approach is helping women overcome childcare challenges while contributing to improved child nutrition, safety and development.

The experiences from Fumbwe and Munyiginya demonstrated that integrating childcare into agri-food systems programming can help create dignified and fulfilling work opportunities for young women, strengthen household resilience and build more inclusive and productive agricultural communities in Rwanda.

Patricia Uwase, Programme Partner, Gender and Safeguarding at Mastercard Foundation Rwanda, said the field visit demonstrated the power of community-led solutions in transforming the lives of children and women.

“This mother who offered her home has truly contributed to building the country. These children are the leaders of tomorrow. What I have seen today has touched my heart. It is a powerful example of what can be achieved when communities and partners work together,” she said.

She added that Mastercard Foundation, together with its partners, is committed to supporting initiatives that help young women overcome barriers and achieve their potential.

“At Mastercard Foundation, we work with many partners on different solutions. We want to see our girls and young women progress, participate fully in the economy and build better futures,” Uwase said.

Lucia Zigiriza, Senior Partners Coordination Officer at AGRA Rwanda, said the convening provided an important opportunity for partners to strengthen collaboration, share experiences and develop solutions that create greater impact across the agri-food systems portfolio.

“We appreciate the Foundation for bringing us together. It is about strengthening the portfolio and learning from each other’s experiences so that we can all create more impact,” Zigiriza said.

The Nigerian National Police immediately launched a manhunt for Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, who was posing as the CEO of PFIPC, to be charged with forgery, false pretense, and other related offenses.

Before going into hiding, Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew had told local Nigerian media outlets that he was innocent and feared his life might be in danger.

Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew had also said that he would agree to appear in court to prove that the institution was legally established.

On the other hand, he himself accuses some senior Nigerian government officials of corruption during his appointment as the CEO of PFIPC and of seizing government funds earmarked for that agency, which the President's office denies.

Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, explained that the agency was established in 2024 to attract foreign investors to invest in Nigeria, but to date, no known activity has been carried out by the agency. 

Two other senior officials of the agency have also begun questioning by the Nigerian National Police.

This week, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu immediately has ordered the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to launch an investigation into the manner in which the agency was set up, and demanded that he be given a report on the matter within 30 days.

The journalists found that the fake agency was headquartered in a building that houses some of the ministries and other government agencies in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. The agency also had accounts opened at the Central Bank of Nigeria. In the 2026-2027 budget, the agency was allocated $950,000, or 1,388,406,000 Rwandan francs.

However, the Accountant-General's Office denied that the PFIPC had any accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria, and insisted that the agency had never received any government funding or salaries.

The Office of the President of Nigeria, confirms that the police forensic analysis has confirmed that a letter written and signed by the president's chief of staff Femi Gbajabiamila, approving the establishment of the PFIPC was forged. 

The prosecution case filed before an Abuja Federal High Court, shows that Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew and his associates are accused of using forged documents in the name of the government to establish a fictitious entity, opening several bank accounts in the name of the entity, and seeking government funding, even though the entity does not appear anywhere in government documents.

Tinubu directed the ICPC to investigate various allegations including Forged appointment letters and official government documents, Use of false claims to seek official recognition and diplomatic support, including visa facilitation, opening of multiple bank accounts using allegedly forged documents and The role of any public officer, private individual, financial institution or intermediary that may have facilitated the alleged scheme. 

The president also ordered investigators to examine the wider circumstances that enabled an allegedly fictitious body to acquire the appearance of official

legitimacy, and to identify weaknesses in government procedures that were alleged to have been exploited.

The scandal has prompted mounting public pressure from civil society organisations, opposition politicians and senior lawyers who have demanded an independent inquiry.

Tinubu said the integrity of the presidency and federal institutions "must be protected against impersonation, forgery, abuse of official identity and

the exploitation of weaknesses in the public service".

"All persons found culpable are to be treated strictly in accordance with applicable law," the president's statement read.

Lucia Zigizira, Senior Partners Coordination Officer at AGRA in Rwanda, said childcare remains a major constraint to women’s participation across agricultural value chains and called for practical solutions that respond to local realities.

“Women cannot fully participate in the agri-food sector if childcare remains a barrier. We must work together to develop practical, community-led solutions that protect children while enabling women to seize economic opportunities.”

She encouraged partners to use the convening to learn from one another and identify approaches that can be replicated across programmes.

“This is an opportunity to learn from one another and identify childcare models that are practical, scalable and responsive to the realities faced by women working across agricultural value chains.”

Delice Fatiro, Lead, Youth Engagement & Inclusion at Mastercard Foundation, said childcare is fundamental to achieving the Foundation’s goal of creating dignified and fulfilling work for young people, particularly young women.

“Unless we address childcare and caregiving responsibilities, we will not fully unlock the potential of young women. For many, the first question is not whether there is a job, but who will take care of their child.”

Fatiro urged partners to move beyond recognising childcare as a challenge and focus on building solutions that communities can sustain.

“We must move beyond saying childcare is important to building solutions that communities trust and that remain sustainable beyond our programmes.”

The session also presented findings from a national childcare assessment conducted across 14 districts, highlighting gaps in childcare services and identifying four priority models for piloting within agri-food programmes.

Sharing lessons from the Mastercard Foundation-supported SERVE (Supporting and Enhancing Resilient and Viable Employment Opportunities) programme, Ingrid Marie Mukobwawase, Safeguarding Technical Advisor at CARE International Rwanda, said childcare is both a safeguarding and inclusion priority.

“We have to protect children while enabling young women to participate fully in project activities.”

CARE is piloting rotational peer-caregiving within farmer groups, establishing mobile childcare spaces near worksites and training caregivers on child safeguarding.

Presenting African Evangelistic Enterprise (AEE) Rwanda’s experience, Ancilla Nibigira, Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Advisor and Safeguarding Focal Person, said childcare directly influences women’s productivity.

“When mothers know their children are safe, they participate more actively. Childcare enables women to attend trainings, make decisions and increase productivity."

AEE is strengthening home-based Early Childhood Development centres and community-managed childcare through the Youth Entrepreneurship for the Future of Food and Agriculture (YEFFA) programme.

Drawing on World Relief Rwanda’s experience, Yannick Niyireba, Director of Programmes, emphasized that sustainable childcare depends on community ownership.

“Parents support childcare when they understand its value. Community ownership and trained caregivers are key to quality childcare.”

World Relief has established home-based Early Childhood Development centres, trained more than 1,800 caregivers and introduced mobile childcare services during trainings and community events.

Participants agreed that investing in safe, accessible and community-owned childcare systems is essential to increasing women’s productivity, strengthening child safeguarding and building more inclusive and resilient agri-food systems.

The Agri-Food Systems Portfolio Partner Convening concludes on 10 July with a field learning visit to Rwamagana District, where participants will observe childcare innovations supporting women entrepreneurs, youth employment and inclusive growth in Rwanda’s agri-food sector.

These discussions follow the joint launch of the “AI for Good Global Commission.” The Commission was established by the United Nations through the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and is chaired by President Paul Kagame and Marc Benioff, one of the founders of the technology company Salesforce, who is also its current CEO.

The President of Estonia, Alar Karis, and his Icelandic counterpart, Halla Tómasdóttir, were among the founding members of the commission. 

The Commission brought together 44 leaders from varioussectors, including heads of governments and states, heads of various technology companies, senior officials from the United Nations, investors and representatives of international non-governmental organizations. 

This Commission aims to develop strategies that increase trust in artificial intelligence, promote innovation, increase access to artificial intelligence technologies for all, and develop strategies that ensure that the economic opportunities and public benefits of artificial intelligence are shared equitably across the world.

This Commission will also serve as a platform that brings together governments, businesses, international organizations, investors, and civil society to monitor the advancement,development and use of artificial intelligence worldwide.

Estonia is well known for its approach to promoting the use of technology in various aspects of its lifestyle, and is also considered one of the countries with the highest percentage of its population having access to modern technology. 

This Northern European country has been recognized as one of the countries that pioneered the practice of e-Governance, and placing internet in many places. 

The country is also known for being the birthplace of the social networking site Skype, one of the first social networking sites to introduce video calling and video conferencing.
