Rwanda Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Food Systems at Global Summit
At a recent global stocktaking summit on food systems transformation, Rwanda’s Minister of Agriculture delivered a compelling address highlighting the country’s progress and reaffirming its commitment to sustainable and inclusive food systems.

Opening with a powerful quote “Food systems transformation is not just about producing more it’s about producing better, and together” the Minister underscored the shift in Rwanda’s agricultural vision. Since the last UN Food Systems Summit, Rwanda has taken decisive steps to localize national food pathways. Through inclusive dialogues, the country has aligned its reforms with Vision 2050 and the African Union’s Malabo Declaration.
Key milestones were highlighted, including scaling up nutrition-sensitive agriculture, promoting youth-led agribusinesses, and rolling out home-grown school feeding programs and biofortified crops to fight malnutrition. The Minister also emphasized Rwanda’s commitment to building climate-resilient agri-food systems. Strategic investments are being channeled into irrigation, regenerative agriculture, and innovative practices like hydroponic fodder production.
Recognizing that partnerships are critical, the Minister pointed to Rwanda’s strong coordination with development partners, UN agencies, and research institutions such as CGIAR. Evidence-based monitoring is being used to ensure accountability and to adjust strategies as needed.
However, significant challenges persist. The Minister called for more concessional and blended financing to bridge the gap between ambition and available resources, particularly in areas such as climate-resilient infrastructure and inclusive extension services. Emphasis was placed on supporting private sector engagement, especially for women and youth.
In closing, Rwanda expressed its readiness to share lessons and host regional learning platforms. The Minister concluded with a hopeful message: “A food system that feeds all populations, nourishes our children, sustains our environment, and empowers our youth is not a dream it is a shared global mission.”
