Bugesera, Huye and Muhanga Set to Receive Increased Electricity Capacity
Rwanda is set to increase electricity capacity for industrial areas, with new electricity facilities to be constructed in Bugesera, Huye and Muhanga districts.
Infrastructure Minister Damien Murwanashyaka said the projects are aimed at ensuring that industries have an adequate and reliable electricity supply as industrial activities continue to expand.
The electricity facility being constructed in Bugesera is 75 percent complete, while the project in Huye is 39 percent complete and the one in Muhanga stands at 17 percent.
The government also plans to add 523 megawatts to the country’s electricity generation capacity over the remaining three years of the second National Strategy for Transformation, NST2.
Of the planned capacity, 300 megawatts will come from hydropower, 165 megawatts from methane gas, while the remaining capacity will come from solar energy.
Rwanda currently has an electricity generation capacity of 472.9 megawatts, while access to electricity has reached 88 percent of the population.
The government is also developing 381 kilometres of new electricity networks and 13 additional substations to strengthen the national electricity grid.
