Hapag-Lloyd Expands Operations in Rwanda

On October 1, 2026, the company announced that it had opened new offices in the three countries as part of its strategy to get closer to customers and improve its cargo transportation services across the continent.

Hapag-Lloyd began its operations in 1847, when one of the companies that preceded it was established in Hamburg, Germany. In 1970, Hapag merged with North German Lloyd, forming Hapag-Lloyd AG, which operates internationally.

Today, Hapag-Lloyd is one of the world’s major container shipping companies, with around 300 vessels and more than 396 offices operating across 139 countries.

In Rwanda, Hapag-Lloyd’s new operations will be based in Kigali as the company continues to expand its presence and strengthen cargo transportation services between Rwanda and international markets.
