Tanzanian President’s Husband Hafidh Ameir Hassan Dies.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died at a hospital in Zanzibar where he was receiving treatment for a heart condition.
The death was announced on September 7, 2026, by Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, who said Hafidh died at Miliomzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar at around 8 a.m.
In a message announcing the death, Ndejembi said:
“Fellow citizens, I am saddened to inform you of the death of the Honourable Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan. The Honourable Hafidh Ameir Hassan passed away today, September 7, 2026, at 8 a.m. at Miliomzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he was receiving treatment for a heart condition.”
The Vice President extended his condolences to the Tanzanian president, her family and the wider Tanzanian population.
“I extend my condolences to Her Excellency the President, her family, relatives, friends and all Tanzanians during this difficult time of mourning,” he said.
Ndejembi said the mourning period is being observed in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.
Messages of condolence have since been sent to President Samia and the Tanzanian people by leaders from several countries and officials from various institutions within the African Union.
As of the publication of this report, President Samia had not publicly commented on her husband’s death.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan was generally known for keeping a low profile and rarely appearing in political activities despite being married to one of Tanzania’s most prominent political figures.
Hafidh and Samia married in 1978 and had four children, three sons and one daughter.
Their daughter, Mwanu Hafidh Ameir, followed in her mother’s footsteps by entering politics. She currently serves as a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
