Heavy Floods Hit South Korea, Leaving One Dead and Hundreds Evacuated
South Korea is facing severe flooding after days of heavy rainfall swept across parts of the country, causing landslides, overflowing rivers and widespread disruption.
The southern province of South Gyeongsang has been among the worst affected, with the city of Geoje recording exceptionally heavy rainfall. Authorities reported that the area received around 810 millimetres of rain over three days, while more than 120 millimetres fell within a single hour.
The heavy rains triggered a landslide in Geoje that struck an apartment building, resulting in the death of one person and leaving others injured.
Hundreds of residents have been forced to leave their homes as authorities continue to warn of further landslides and flooding. Around 390 people have been evacuated, while thousands of households have experienced power outages.
Several roads have also been submerged, making transportation difficult in affected areas. Emergency teams have been deployed to assist residents and monitor areas at risk of additional flooding and landslides.
The extreme rainfall comes shortly after South Korea experienced unusually hot and dry weather, highlighting the country’s recent sharp shift in weather conditions.
Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to follow evacuation orders and remain alert as heavy rain continues to threaten parts of the country.
