Rwanda Closes Bugesera Correctional Facility, Transfers Inmates.
The Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS) has announced the closure of Bugesera Correctional Facility and the transfer of inmates to other correctional facilities across the country.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday, October 12, 2026.
In the statement, RCS informed families and relatives of inmates held at the facility that the closure took effect on the same day and that all inmates had been transferred elsewhere.
“The management of the Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS) informs those who have relatives at Bugesera Correctional Facility that the facility has been closed effective today, and that the inmates who were held there have been transferred to other correctional facilities,” the statement reads.
RCS did not provide further details in the announcement about the reasons for the closure, the number of inmates transferred or the specific facilities to which they were relocated.
