South African Police Captain Killed While Investigating Former Mayor’s Death
In South Africa, a police captain has been killed after spending days investigating the death of former Knysna mayor Aubrey Tsengwa.
The 50-year-old police captain was shot and killed in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2026, while carrying out a police operation in Knysna. According to South African news outlet SABC News, the captain was part of a team investigating Tsengwa’s death as well as other killings reported in the area over the past week.
SABC News reported that the police officer and his colleagues were responding to information about people allegedly in possession of illegal firearms. When officers arrived in the Sewende Laan area, a gunfight reportedly broke out between them and one of the suspects. The police captain and the suspected gunman were both killed.
The officer’s death comes as investigations into Aubrey Tsengwa’s killing continue. Tsengwa, an African National Congress (ANC) councillor and former mayor of Knysna, was shot dead on August 19 while returning home.
South African authorities are continuing investigations into both deaths as they work to establish what led to the shootings.
